Cybele, the great mother of the Phrygian hills, took the shepherd Attis for her Lover. Though their love was strong, it was doomed to end in tragedy when Attis was driven mad upon seeing Cybele’s true, godly form. He would die of blood loss after castrating himself beneath a pine tree.
