When King Peleus and the Nereid Thetis were married, they threw a lavish wedding to which all the gods were invited except Eris, goddess of discord. In anger, she crafted a golden apple on which was inscribed “For the fairest” and threw it among the wedding guests. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite began to squabble over who deserved the apple, and so Eris, nurse of war, set in motion the events that would lead to the bloody Trojan war and the fall of Ilium.
