Dionysus and Charon in the Valley of Frogs

Great Lord Dionysus travelled deep into the depths of Hades disguised as his half-brother Heracles with the aim of resurrecting the playwright Euripides. Charon, the ferryman of the dead, aided him by ferrying him part of the way, but as they neared the shore they were swarmed by the great frogs of Hades. Their rhythmic cry of “Brekekekex-koax-koax” greatly irritated Dionysus.
