The anchoress Christina, though born to a wealthy family, rejected a life of luxury, changed her name, and hid herself away in a cell attached to a church in Markyate. She had frequent visions of Mary, the Queen of heaven, to whom she was devoted and who in turn protected her when her cell was attacked by toads and lesser demons.
